Removing a prior criminal record is referred to as expunging a criminal record. This is more easily allowed for individuals that were arrested, charged, but not convicted. In this case, the individual can have his arrest record expunged as it was a false arrest. However, if you were convicted, some states will allow a certain degree of expunging your record while others will not. Factors that are taken into consideration and which vary by state include the seriousness of the crime, the time period that has passed, if no other convictions were filed afterwards, and other details that are carefully examined. Some have found it very helpful to hire lawyers that specifically specialize in Criminal Record Expungement as they are very effective in clearing your record. Here is a resourceful article.
