I was assaulted and used self defense but ended up injuring the attacker, he is now pressing charges, how can I defend this?
I was at a bar where someone had assaulted me first and threw the first punches. I proceed to defend myself and ended up injuring the guy pretty badly. I have a court appearance coming up soon, is it likely I'm going to be charged and prosecuted?

In self defense cases, there are a lot of various factors and evidence to take into consideration. You have the right to defend yourself yet self defense, including property protection laws vary by state. However, if you get carried away with the defense you can be charged for that as well as the original attacker may end up with much worst injuries than you've incurred. Other things the judge will also look at include your prior record and charges if any, etc. Evidence of injuries and eye witnesses will be very important as well in a court room case as the injured party will probably sue for damages. A lawyer would help cross examine the plaintiffs statements, analyze the evidence, and help fight the charge. Even if you ended up crossing the line with your self defense, a skilled attorney may be able to help get the penalties of doing so significantly reduced.
