Question:

I signed up for a job listing on Craigslist that involved processing payments for a small company. All of a sudden, I’ve received a criminal complaint stating that I am an accessory to internet fraud. All I did was the job I was told to do, and what the company provided me. What should I do?

Answer: (1)

These new internet fraud scams have recently preyed on the high number of unemployed Americans whom are looking for just about any sort of work. The US Justice Department defines internet fraud as “any type of fraud scheme that uses one or more components of the Internet - such as chat rooms, e-mail, message boards, or Web sites - to present fraudulent solicitations to prospective victims, to conduct fraudulent transactions, or to transmit the proceeds of fraud to financial institutions or to other connected with the scheme.” If you have processed the funds by transferring money from one account to another via the internet, you can be held liable for internet fraud. It is important that you speak to a lawyer immediately to understand your rights and determine the proper course of action.
