Question:

I was recently assaulted at a party by two guys from school. I ended up getting extremely angry after I was struck first and had a drink spilled on me so I attacked both of them back. I left one of the guys severaly injured and now the police are involved. What should I expect and do I need a lawyer?

Answer:

It is difficult to precisely answer your question without knowing the remaining details and which state you are in as assault laws and charges can vary quite a bit. Self Defense is often used to combat assault charges and with the right evidence, witnesses, and lawyer, you can drastically reduce the assault charge. However, since your effort in defending yourself created severe injuries onto the attacker, you will more than likely be liable to 1. Pay for the damages you have caused 2. Facing criminal charges up to Felony Assault. Because this was a case of self defense, and it sounds like you might be a minor without a prior record, you should consult with an attorney immediately and truthfully explain all the details of the situation. Assault cases which cause severe injuries are usually Felony offenses or a higher Degree of an Assault Offense with stiffer legal consequences.
