O.J. Simpson Charged with Multiple Felony Charges

O.J. Simpson Felony Charges

O.J. Simpson was arrested on Sunday, September 16 in Clark County, Las Vegas on charges of armed robbery, among others, of personal career memorabilia from two sports memorabilia dealers that thought they were meeting with a collector to unload the stolen merchandise. Simpson was alerted to the dealers and the stolen merchandise several weeks before by Tom Riccio, an auction house owner, who told Simpson two men were selling some his personal memorabilia. Riccio set up a meeting with the two men and “an interested collector” at a room in The Palms Casino-Hotel. Bruce Fromong and Alfred Beardsley were the two collectors trying to unload the stolen merchandise. They expected to meet with a private collector interested in Simpson memorabilia, but they had no idea just how close to the memorabilia this interested collector was.

Simpson showed up to the hotel room on Thursday night, September 13 with five of his friends to collect the merchandise. His posse, Charles Howard Cashmore, Walter Alexander, Clarence Stewart, Michael McClinton, and Tom Scotto, met at a weeding cocktail party and proceeded to plan out their rescue of the sports memorabilia. The group, allegedly, had two guns and demanded the release of the merchandise to them. The merchandise included: Simpson’s Hall of Fame certificate, a picture of Simpson with J. Edgar Hoover, photos from Simpson’s childhood, Joe Montana cleats, and other sports memorabilia, most of which were autographed by Simpson. Simpson claims he could not call the police to help him retrieve his stolen merchandise because he has found the police to be unresponsive to him in the past. Clark County police said they still have to determine whether the merchandise does indeed belong to Simpson.

The charges include:

  • Kidnapping
  • Robbery with use of a deadly weapon
  • Burglary while in possession of a deadly weapon
  • Coercion with use of a deadly weapon
  • Assault with a deadly weapon
  • Conspiracy to commit kidnapping
  • Conspiracy to commit robbery
  • Conspiracy to commit a crime

Simpson was booked into Clark County Detention Center on Sunday night where he was held without bail until his arraignment on Thursday, September 20. Simpson, who claims he did nothing wrong, did not enter a plea at this hearing, but was released on $125,000 bond. Clark County police Lt. Clint Nichols said they don’t have proof that Simpson was armed during the incident. However, there is a 38-second recording of the incident where the voice of a man identified as Simpson exclaims, “Don't let nobody out of here” and “Think you can steal my $#!+ and sell it? Beardsley, who was one of the collectors in the hotel room, said he would like the case against Simpson dropped.
