Question:

I’ve been sending money on behalf of my company through Western Union to their subsidiary company in England. My job is primarily based at home, and we have meetings with other coworkers via email. A few coworkers are expressing concerns over the legality of our actions. Should we be worried?

Answer: (1)

You most certainly should be worried about your actions. One of the more common online fraud charges are wire fraud charges where illegal money is transferred from one account to another via wire transfer. The common method is setting up fake companies where people like you are recruited to transfer money from their “company accounts” in one location to overseas accounts. Usually, these “company accounts” are nothing more than stolen bank accounts or PayPal accounts that are funded with stolen credit card numbers and accounts. Even though you are supposedly acting under the direction of a company, you can be found guilty of being an accessory to wire fraud in the very least, and at worst be guilty of wire fraud charges.
