Question:

I have a buddy I know that regularly sees prostitutes. No one else really knows except for me. I am a little worried about his well being cause hes usually a pretty good guy with a good job and has good things going for him. What type of penalties is he facing for engaging in prostitution?

Answer: (1)

Prostitution laws and statutes just as any other laws vary by state in terms of what is punishable and the penalties of a conviction. Prostitution is currently only legal in 11 counties in Nevada & Rhode Island. Whether you are a prostitute or a customer receiving prostitution services, the penalties in all almost every state are nearly identical for both parties.

First offense usually includes a minimum of 30 days in Jail and/or fines ($200-$10,000, most states fine less than $2,500 and in between $200-$1,000) and are considered as Misdemeanors. As repeat offenses occur, the misdemeanor charge in many states scales up to a Felony with required jail time sentencing plus stiffer fines.

It would highly advisable to have a Criminal Defense Attorney defend your case if you are charged with prostitution involvement. Al though the explicit evidence may be leading to a direct conviction, an attorney would be able to help negotiate a reduction in penalties and jail time (possibly to no jail time) depending on your prior record and other factors involved in the case.
