Question:

I went along with some friends when they broke into a house in the neighborhood and stole a bunch of electronics and cash and jewelry. Now, all of us are being charged with class B felony burglary. What does this mean and what is going to happen to me?

Answer: (1)

The specific rules and definitions of burglary differ on a state-by-state basis since burglary statutes are found in state penal codes. Generally, however, class B burglary is a form of first-degree burglary and usually means that the burglars behaved intentionally and/or carried a weapon or threatened serious bodily injury. Depending on the jurisdiction and whether or not you were armed, the minimum sentence will generally be several years in prison. In some jurisdictions, five years is the minimum, in others four or six years. You should speak with an experienced criminal defense lawyer as soon as possible who can help you understand your options for defending against these charges.
