My friend got caught breaking into my neighbors home while they were gone on vacation by another neighbor. He stole a few things, although I am not sure what, and just got arrested. What type of penalties and trouble will he be facing?

State Laws are different with penalties for burglary. Typically, first degree burglary sentencing will land your friend in between 2-6 years in State prison, and may also count as a “Strike” as it does under California Law. Each preceding felony offense would increase the charges drastically.
However, with a skilled attorney, the charge can be reduced to second degree burglary which usually comes with much lower penalties such as a misdemeanor charge, and maximum 1 year in prison. Your friend should consult with an attorney immediately to get the charges reduced as much as possible.
