I was ready to buy a used car from a private owner, but when I looked at the registration document, something just didn’t look right. How can I spot a fake automobile registration document?

Don’t buy a used car from a private individual, unless acceptable, transferable proof of ownership in the name of the true owner of the vehicle is available. Examine the proof of ownership before you pay for the vehicle. Make sure you receive a valid title certificate or a registration that displays the word "transferable". If it does not say transferable, it may be a fake automobile registration document. Check the proof of ownership document and make sure it displays the name of the seller. You can also ask to see the seller’s driver’s license and compare the name with the one on the proof of ownership.
If you have further questions or if none of these proofs of ownership are available, contact your state’s Department of Motor Vehicles for help.
