Question:

For the past month, I have been receiving a lot of threatening e-mails and messages online from e-mails I don’t recognize. On MySpace, its people I don’t even know and the account looks fake. The messages talk about attacking me and doing very brutal explicit things. I’m really scared and I don’t know who this is but I could have an idea. How do I pursue this? Can the police do anything in finding the person? What would he be charged with?

Answer: (1)

This is an unnerving and frightening matter, and you should involve the police promptly. Gather all the e-mails and messages you have received and take them to your local police station. It is probably possible to track down who is sending the messages to you by obtaining the IP address of the sender and locating the computer the messages came from.

Many, but not all, states have laws that specifically make it a crime to harass someone with electronic communication such as phone, email or instant message. It is also illegal to stalk or threaten someone, and the emails you've received could be evidence of such a crime. Someone convicted of harassment or stalking could face jail time and a fine.
