Question:

I was just curious but let’s say I accidentally received counterfeit money for maybe selling something on craigslist.. Then I later use it somewhere and get caught.. What type of trouble would I be looking at? What are counterfeit money charges and penalties?

Answer:

The United States along with the rest of Global Governments takes counterfeit money very seriously. It is an on going problem around the world and as quickly as currency is changing with new counterfeit proof methods, the codes continually get cracked and the schemes continue.

If you have anything over .05 cents of counterfeit money, whether you distribute, or are caught with possession, or are caught with tools used to produce counterfeit money, the penalty is the same. Federal Law will land you a minimum of 15 years in prison and/or hefty fines. You are definitely going to need to hire a Lawyer to prove you had it without knowing. On your own, you’d definitely be looking at a sure conviction. The police would have no idea you did not know and cannot simply give you the benefit of the doubt.
