Information on the Death Penalty
The death penalty or capital punishment is the ultimate form of punishment for murder or other capital offenses. There are several different types of crimes which may prescribe the death penalty as just punishment. Not all states accept the death penalty and certain states have their own specific set of criteria in place to determine whether the offense merits capital punishment. Information on the death penalty found that in a recent study, 38 states and the federal government have statutes for capital punishment. In 2007, 42 inmates (all men) were executed in 10 states. In the other 28 states, no one was executed.
Below are some of the crimes that may carry the death penalty if the state that the alleged crime was committed in supports capital punishment:
- First Degree Murder
- Murder of a Police Officer
- Murder during the commission of a felony
- Murder of a Narcotics Agent
- Conspiracy to Capital Murder
- Serial Murder
There are extenuating circumstances which will determine the severity, nature and intent of a crime and whether or not a state will prescribe the death penalty. State legislature is constantly reviewing the current policy in cases to determine whether there is just cause to support the punishment. The balance between morality and justice is an ongoing subject that remains at the heat of debate for concerned US citizens, victims of crime and law makers.
