Guantanamo Defense Attorneys Leak CIA Information
August 24, 2009
Detainees in the military’s Guantanamo Bay prison in Cuba were appointed military attorneys for their defense. The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) has worked hand-in-hand with these lawyers to ensure that the detainees receive an appropriate level of legal representation.
However, the Justice Department is currently investigating a possible leak on the part of these attorneys. According to the charges, three lawyers showed photographs of C.I.A. interrogators- some of whom were involved in covert operations- to their clients.
The photographs came from an independent investigation by the ACLU and the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers. If it is discovered that the photos were leaked with the knowledge that they were sensitive information, the three attorneys being accused could face severe charges. They could be disbarred, fined or even face jail time for knowingly sharing national secrets with individuals accused of terrorism.
Members of the ACLU believe that the alleged case is being used to shut down the defense of the detainees.
