My son made a stupid mistake and landed in jail. His bond was set at $10,000. I don't really want him to have to sit in jail until his court appearances, but I don't have the $10,000 either. What can I do?

You could enlist the help of a bail bondsman. A bail bond will cost you 10% of the bail amount, or $1000. If you were to pay the $10,000 without the help of a bond company, the full amount would be held by the court to guarantee that your son makes all his court appearances. If he were to skip bail, you would lose the $10,000. If he did make all his court appearances, the court would mail you a check for $10,000 in 6-8 weeks.
With a bond company, you pay $1000 and you do not get that money back. But your son would be free and have the benefit of living a normal life in between court appearances. Bondsmen sometimes will request collateral as well, but you get that back when the bond is exonerated and your account is paid in full.
I would suggest you contact a criminal defense attorney to advise you on how to proceed.
