Question:

What are the different classes of identity theft?

Answer:

Identity theft laws vary by state, so Indiana identity theft may be different than identity theft in New York or some other state. However, most states include several possible classes of identity theft y could be charged with:

  • Medical Identity Theft – when someone steals your social security number and medical insurance information to gain medical treatment, procedures, and medications, they have committed medical identity theft.  This can not only effect your financial standing and access to medical care, but can even be life threatening if you are given the wrong blood type due to medical identity theft.
  • Financial and Credit Identity Theft – this most common type of identity theft involves someone stealing your credit card information to make purchases, opening a card in your name that you did not authorize, and more.  This can have a serious effect on your credit and your financial future.
  • Driver License Identity Theft – This occurs when someone steals your license and uses it as identification or to help make a purchase of a car in some other location.
  • Social Security Identity Theft – When someone steals your Social Security number in order to gain employment.  If that happens, the IRS might try to find you for income taxes that you do not owe.
  • Criminal Identity Theft – If someone commits a crime, and then gives your name during their arrest, they have committed criminal or character identity theft.

If you are accused of identity theft, you need to call an experienced lawyer who can help you to fight the charges against you, as many of the classes of identity theft carry serious criminal penalties.
