In most cases vandalism, which can include destruction of property, graffiti and tagging or other mutilation or altering of public property is considered a misdemeanor and results in fines, restitution and community service for most first time offenses. However, when the intent of the vandalism was to harass, target or threaten an individual or group because of their race, culture, national origin, sexual orientation, religious believes or their disability it is considered a much more significant offense.
