Vandalism

Vandalism is the destruction or disfigurement of someone’s property, be it public or private. The person or persons who are responsible for committing the act do the act of vandalism with an attitude of willful maliciousness. Vandalism may be considered as typical “kid stuff” by some, but it is definitely not a minor crime. Every state has slightly different definitions for vandalism, but it is a punishable act, no matter where it takes place. Vandalism can be either a misdemeanor or a felony. Acts of vandalism can include, but are not limited to littering, breaking windows, ransacking property, “egging” or “rolling” property, damaging mailboxes, keying a car’s paint, slashing tires, filling locks with glue, or throwing salt on someone’s lawn in order to kill the grass. The motive for such behavior can be simple envy or anger toward someone, or just a random act of destructiveness. Many countries handle vandalism much more sternly than the United States does. For example, in Singapore, someone who even attempts vandalism can be placed in prison for up to three years. They may also be punished by being beaten with a cane. In the UK, an act of vandalism will get the guilty party an Anti-Social Behavior Order, or ASBO.
