Underage alcohol consumption is a growing problem across the country. Alcohol consumption by minors is illegal. It is also a danger to others. The 16 to 20 year old age group has the highest record of traffic crashes and alcohol intensifies this problem. Teenage drinking can cause permanent brain damage and lead to a lifetime of serious addition problems. Early intervention efforts are the best answer to underage alcohol consumption issues. State governments are acting to reduce the availability of alcohol to underage drinkers and increase the punishments for teens caught committing this crime. The drinking age is 21 and anyone younger than this is subject to a zero tolerance law in most states. This means that a blood alcohol level of as little as 0.00-0.02 is punishable.
