Truancy

Truancy is a failure to attend school by a child who is old enough. Truancy is known as a status offence. What this means is that truancy is a crime for a young person who still attends school, but not a crime for an adult. Truancy is handled in a different way by each state in the United States. Most states have school attendance laws that are all their own. These laws declare how old a child must be in order to go to school, and how old a child has to be in order to “drop out” of school. Any intentional and unauthorized absence by a school-aged child is considered to be truancy. This is totally unrelated to absences that are known to the parent or guardian, and have to do with medical and/or dental appointments. A truant usually skips school on his or her own. Some children do go to school, but for one reason or another, they do not go to their classes. This is also considered truancy.
