Often termed a "five finger discount" many Americans see shoplifting as a very petty crime that is a way at getting back at the high prices charged by retail outlets. It is estimated that 70% of the popular has shoplifted something at some time in their life and most shoplifters that are caught have already committed the same crime an average or 87 times before their arrest. Despite what society may view it as, shoplifting criminal charges are serious and can significantly impact on your ability to fine employment, get into some school and training programs or to working within certain employment fields. Shoplifting charges on your record can also cause problems later on, especially if you are ever charged with another misdemeanor or felony crime. Shoplifting can also be a very serious compulsion and may require intensive counseling and education to overcome. Typically those that are compulsive shoplifters may also suffer from depression or related mental health issues.
