Shoplifting Crime

Shoplifting is the crime of taking goods or merchandize from a retail store. The legal designation for this crime is petty theft. Some professional shoplifters seek expensive merchandize like clothing and jewelry for resale. However, most shoplifters are amateurs who see an opportunity to take something they desire and do so. Switching labels in order to get a better price is also a common form of shoplifting. This crime has increased a dramatic 10-20% as the economy has declined. The penalties for shoplifting often depend on the value of the merchandize stolen. This growing crime is receiving more attention from lawmakers and enforcement officials.
