Security Fraud

The white-collar crime of securities fraud has received more interest since style maven Martha Stewart was indicted on four counts of selling close to 4000 shares of stock because she had inside information on what would happen to the stock on the next day. The Food and Drug Administration had made a decision on a drug product that would greatly change the value of this stock. Ms. Stewart was also guilty of obstructing justice when she lied about selling her shares of stock because she knew the price was going to drop the day before she sold the shares. When convicted of security fraud, Stewart received a fine of one million dollars, and a sentence with a maximum fine of 20 years in prison. Although Martha Stewart spent only 5 months in prison, and another 5 months of home confinement as well as two years of probation for her lies, she still steadfastly maintains her innocence.
