Protect Yourself From Identity Theft

Although identify theft happens to over 10 million Americans every year, there are some relatively simple steps that you can use to protect yourself and your good credit. The first and most important step is to only provide personal, identifying information to people you know and trust. Never give your information over the phone, particularly your Social Security Number, driver's license number, bank account number or any credit cards unless you know who you are speaking with. Always keep any passwords or code words needed to access account separate from any account numbers, and definitely away from your credit cards or debit cards. Never give anyone your passwords or PINs for any reason. Last, be sure to monitor your credit reports on a regular basis. There are free credit reports available on a yearly basis from the three credit reporting agencies that will allow you to determine if someone has opened up a credit card or loan under you name.
