Phishing

Phishing is when a person attempts via email or instant messaging to get sensitive information such as credit card numbers, passwords, and usernames by posing as an entity that the recipient would trust, such as a bank, an auction site, or an online payment processer such as PayPal. Phishing also makes use of fake websites that are carefully constructed to look as much like the actual site being emulated as is possible. Phishers hope that the unsuspecting public will respond to these emails or IMs, go to the fake website, and enter their sensitive information on the site. These messages always say something urgent to make it seem mandatory that this information is received as quickly as possible. Phishers enjoy capturing financial information, and make use of social networking sites to try out such phishing forms as social engineering, link manipulation, and website forgery.
