Perjury Law

Perjury law is one of the more difficult to prove cases, however individuals are successfully prosecuted under this law every year. In general a person that commits perjury has to have falsified a statement or provided intentionally and inaccurate testimony in some form in any type of legal proceeding. This can include lying under oath, giving a false written statement or not providing information that the individual is concealing. It is not required that the individual know that the information was going to influence the issues before the court, rather all that has to be shown is that the individual should have reasonably been able to understand that it could. Knowingly providing false information is typically understood to affect an outcome, however if you did not know the information was false or misleading there may be a criminal defense. Subornation of perjury is when anyone tries to get another person to lie on a legal document or in court, and is considered just as serious as perjury.
