Murder Charges

Murder charges can vary, depending on where the murder takes place. In general, there are four different murder charges seen in courtrooms today. These are manslaughter, murder in the first degree, murder in the second degree, and felony murder. Manslaughter is the least serious, and felony murder is the most serious. The two murder charges in between, murder in the first and murder in the second degree, have harsh sentences. First-degree murder charges are planned, deliberate actions. Second-degree murder charges are not pre-planned. Felony murder charges are given if the death occurs in the midst of criminal activity. There is no felony murder rule in England, Wales, or Northern Ireland, but one does exist in the United States.
