Kidnapping

Kidnapping is when a person of any age is physically removed from their home, place of employment, or virtually anywhere they may happen to be, and this removal is against their will. They are then kept as a prisoner by not being allowed to leave the place where they have been taken. Known as false imprisonment, this act is often considered a separate crime. Common reasons for a person’s kidnapping can include the anticipation of a reward, not necessarily a monetary one, by the kidnapper. People are often kidnapped for political reasons, or for a parent to take custody of their child when they do not have the legal right to do so. Kidnapping laws can be quite complex, and usually require an attorney to sort them out properly.

Fast Facts

  • Kidnapping is most often done by a family member. Even if a minor child agrees to be taken away, the adult can still face kidnapping charges.
