Juvenile Theft

The largest percentage of juvenile theft cases involve shoplifting, typically at the petty theft level of less than $400 in most states. However there are juvenile theft cases that can rise to the level of a felony grand theft charge, especially if the juvenile stole a vehicle or other type of expensive item. In most states the age under which a child can be charged as a juvenile is seventeen, however if the charge is grand theft or if there was some type of aggravating or enhancing factor in the theft or the arrest they may also be tried as adults, subject to adult penalties and sanctions through the court. In addition to just the juvenile facing charges and sanctions, in some states the parents may be held liable for the child's actions, including paying fines and possibly having to deal with charges of failing to supervise a minor. Generally in most areas a first time shoplifting or petty theft, or in some instances even a higher value grand theft, will result in education regarding theft and stealing, probation time, electronic monitoring and sometimes mandatory counseling for the youth.
