Juvenile Drug Possession

Children are curious and often want to grow up too fast. Often this need to feel adult leads them to try drugs. Juvenile drug possession is beginning at an earlier and earlier age—as young as 8 according to reports. Juveniles are trying all the same drugs as adults—marijuana, heroin, cocaine and methamphetamine. They are also facing adult penalties for the crime. In most states juvenile punishment is more about rehabilitation. Children found guilty of drug possession are sent to juvenile detention centers and not prison. In these centers, the children continue their education and receive counseling. Juvenile records are sealed and many juveniles do not get into trouble as adults and have a clean record. However, if the child is habitually arrested for juvenile drug possession, he or she could be held in the detention center until he or she is an adult then serve time in prison.

Fast Facts

  • That same study said that 3.3% of students had used any form of cocaine (e.g., powder, crack, or freebase) one or more times during the 30 days before they took the survey.
