Health care fraud is a form of fraud. It is a white collar-crime, a criminal offence and a felony. Health care fraud is the filing of health care claims in a fraudulent manner to obtain a profit. There are various health care fraud schemes. They may involve or originate in the health care practitioner or the member. The practitioner can be guilty of health care fraud if he or she bills for care never received by the stated individuals. A fraudulent health care practitioner may falsify the dates or change the description of the services he or she actually provided. A practitioner may bill the health care provider or the government for services she or he never rendered. A practitioner may even maximize his or her own gain by intentionally providing false information that prolongs the treatment or increases the billing process. Members may provide incorrect data or forge and sell prescription drugs.
