Harassment Laws

There are many laws in place to help a person who is the victim of harassment. Harassing someone is a crime, and though it may be difficult to prove in a court of law, it can be either a gross misdemeanor or a felony. Felony charges are based on the harasser’s criminal record. Note that the person doing the harassment does not have to have the intention that his or her behavior will cause the victim any fear or other emotions. A restraining order should be filed with the local police in an attempt to keep the harasser away. If the harasser is a former spouse, a domestic abuse order of protection can be most helpful. An attorney can be contacted for assistance in filing a lawsuit against the harasser. It is possible to collect punitive damages or compensatory damages from a harassment lawsuit. If your harassment occurred at work or at school, and the security measures at these establishments were not adequate, it is possible that a lawsuit can also be filed against them.
