Grand Theft Law

Although grand theft charges are often seen in association with stolen vehicles, any value amount stolen that is over $400 is considered grand theft in most areas, anything under is considered petty theft in most jurisdictions. Since most cars are worth more than $400, the term grand theft auto has become synonymous with the much broader charge of grand theft. Not all states and jurisdictions use $400 as the dividing line so it is important to know your local laws with regards to the difference between grand and petty theft. Grand theft laws also differ fairly significantly in the sentences that a judge can impose. Typically in most areas if there are no aggravating factors, the judge may be willing to consider probation, electronic monitoring, community service hours, stiff fines and restitution in lieu of jail time for first offenders. Second and subsequent offenses typically result in significant amounts of jail time.
