Grand Theft Auto

Grand theft auto occurs when someone steals or attempts to steal a car, bus, truck, motorcycle or any other motor vehicle. This criminal act is also simply called motor vehicle theft. Several different methods are used to attempt to steal vehicles. Hotwiring and towing occur when the thief has no keys to the vehicle, and must commit a break and enter to get access to the car. A TWOC, which means “taken without owner’s consent” takes place when the thief does have the keys. An opportunistic theft is taking an unattended car with the keys in the ignition. Carjacking is theft of a vehicle by force. Fraudulent theft is taking ownership of a car that you know is stolen and paying for it with a fraudulent transfer of funds. Certain tools such as screwdrivers, extra wires, a slide hammer puller, and a “Slim Jim” are needed for stealing vehicles. People commit grand theft auto to sell parts from the vehicle, to resell the vehicle, to use the vehicle as transportation or to help them commit a crime, or for simple joyriding.
