Grand Theft

When a person takes something that has a value of more than $400, fully intending to keep the item or items permanently, and does so against the wishes or without the knowledge of the owner of the item, that person has committed what is known as grand theft. It does not matter if property, money, or labor are stolen. As long as the item or items have a monetary value that is above the $400 set limit, they will be charged with grand theft if caught. Grand theft can be considered either a misdemeanor or a felony, depending on the location where it takes place. The act of grand theft is normally punishable by law, but the length of the punishment depends upon the amount the stolen item or items are worth. In most places, the term is up to a year in a country jail, or up to sixteen months in a state prison.
