The grand jury is a group of people gathered together for a specific purpose. The members originally reflected a cross-section of the community. A prosecutor requires the services of a grand jury to help determine whether there is enough evidence to proceed against the accused. They examine the data but do not decide upon the guilt of innocence of the party or parties involved. The grand jury sits to decide whether the accusations and facts presented warrant further action. The grand jury may also suggest there is enough information currently at hand to proceed with a formal accusation or an indictment. Only the preliminary facts are presented before a grand jury. This may entail an indictment and eventually, a trial. Some states have grand juries at the federal and county level.
