Extortion Sentence

Extortion is a threat, a way that someone tries to get money or services out of someone in exchange for keeping a secret or not harming them. For example, “If you don’t pay me $100,000, I am going to sue you and air all of your dirty laundry,” is extortion. Extortion crimes can be difficult to prove unless there is a written or taped threat to present to the court. However, an extortion sentence usually includes jail time once the person is convicted. If convicted of extortion under federal statutes, a person could spend up to three years in prison. The exception is if the extortion was a demand for ransom in which case the maximum sentence is 20 years.States have equally harsh extortion sentences. In Louisiana, a person convicted of extortion will serve one to 15 years in prison.
