Extortion Felony

Threaten someone bodily harm if they don’t give you money, hold someone for ransom or try to bribe a public official and you could find yourself charged with extortion. In most cases, extortion is a felony since large sums of money are involved. However like a few other states, Maryland does have misdemeanor and extortion felony laws to account for someone who may try to extort less than $500 which most often does not result in a prison sentence. An extortion felony of more than $500 is punishable by up to 10 years in prison and a $5,000 fine. Federal laws are different. If the offender was trying to extort less than $1,000, the punishment is a maximum year in prison or three years in prison if the amount was more than $1,000. However if the extortion involved a ransom, the sentence could be up to 20 years in prison.
