Extortion

The criminal offence of extortion takes place when one person obtains a behavior he or she desires, money, goods, or services from another person by either threatening them with violence or by causing other harm to them, their reputation, or their property. Extortion is different than robbery, in that the behavior or property is granted by the victim in order to avoid the threat. Extortion is just another word for the practice of forcing someone to do something for you. The victim does give his or her consent for the extortionist to take their property, but only because they are afraid not to because of the threats made. Several forms of extortion include, but are not limited to blackmail, bribery, and ransom. Often, people in positions of authority will resort to extortion. When a policeman tells a driver that by handing him $100, he can avoid a ticket, the policeman is practicing extortion. Politicians have also been caught abusing their power with the public by committing extortion. Extortion is considered to be a white collar crime and is a felony, punishable by heavy fines, jail time, and more.
