Dui sentences will vary based on the location in which the offense occurred, the level of alcohol present, if any accidents or injuries occurred, if any other crimes were committed and if this is a first or repeat offense. Even for most first time offenders the DUI sentences are going to be heavy and significant, sending a clear and hopefully significant message about the consequences of drinking and driving. In most states significant fines, often into the thousands of dollars can be ordered, jail time may be required and probation and mandatory alcohol awareness classes will be sentenced. In addition many states may require the driver install an interlocking ignition device in the vehicle at their expense, which will require them to blow in the device to start the vehicle and as required when driving.
