DUI is an abbreviation for “Driving under the influence”. The term is used to describe someone who has either consumed too much alcohol, or is under the influence of some type of drug while operating a vehicle. The vehicle can include an airplane, a boat, a bicycle or motorcycle. It can include a horse or a mule, or even a riding lawnmower! In most parts of the world, it is considered a criminal offense to operate a vehicle while affected by drink or drug. If a person injures or kills someone while under the influence, they are normally heavily fined, and can do jail time as well. Law enforcement agencies typically use a blood level sobriety test to determine someone’s blood alcohol content. The blood alcohol reading for determining whether or not someone is legally impaired varies according to the country where the person is stopped and tested. There are also field sobriety tests used to show if someone is impaired.
