Drug fraud can occur in two different general categories and in two very different situations. Typically drug fraud with regards to illegal drugs occurs when the seller cuts, laces or mixes in some other substance with the drug in order to have more quantity to sell. This then causes the users to increase the amount they consumer, resulting in significant overdoses and death when correctly manufactured drugs are obtained. Legal drug fraud occurs whenever a doctor or medical professional writes unnecessary prescriptions or only prescribes specific medications because they are obtaining a kickback from the pharmaceutical company. Doctors or nurses may also be involved in drug fraud if they attempt to sell free samples provided by the individual pharmaceutical companies or offer to privately sell prescription medication of any kind to a patient. Individuals that steal prescription pads from medical offices and write fraudulent prescriptions can also be charged under drug fraud laws.
