Criminal Child Neglect

In Polk County, Tennessee, an infant was found in a bathroom alone at a campsite. Three adults were sleeping nearby and did not hear the infant’s cries. They were charged with criminal child neglect and were fined and placed on probation. The three had been drinking and smoking marijuana, according to reports. This is just one example of criminal child neglect. Other examples include leaving a child alone in a car (particularly when the weather is very cold or hot), failing to get proper medical care for child when the parent can pay for it and failing to provide proper nutrition. Unfortunately in only the most extreme case do the parents serve jail or prison time. If the child dies or is seriously injured, the charges can be upgraded to murder or aggravated assault.
